Suspected Antiquities Smuggling Ring Exposed – 15/07/11
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents claim to have dismantled an organization responsible for conspiring to smuggle Egyptian Middle Eastern and Asian antiquities into the United States and conspiring to launder money in furtherance of smuggling. UK Firm Aims to Boost Egypt Tourism – 14/07/11
A British agency has been tasked by Egypt’s ministry of tourism to boost the country’s visitors across the UK. Media Consulta UK will take on both consumer PR and the local travel trade as Egypt looks to get tourists back to the country after political unrest earlier this year saw sharp declines in travelers. Recovery of Further Stolen Artefacts – 13/07/11
Great news on the recovery of artefacts that were stolen from the museum magazine of eastern Qantara. The artefacts (22 in total), include rare pottery dating back to the age of the Hyksos and five bronze coins dating to the Ptolemaic era. More on this story on the Ahram Online website.

This recent article posted in The New York Times highlights Zahi Hawass alleged corruption and the use of his government position in controlling Egyptian heritage and access to Egypt ancient sites.

The Egyptian Museum Sees Return on Visitor Numbers – 10/07/11
The Egyptian Museum of Antiquities in Cairo is beginning attract a more normal flow of visitors, since the start of the ‘day-trippers’ arriving this Summer from the Red Sea resorts, such as Sharm el-Sheikh. More on the Ahram Online website.

New Scheduled Flights Planned from the UK – 09/07/11
Monarch’s new scheduled flights to Sharm el-Sheikh will operate three times per week from Gatwick and Manchester airports in the UK on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays, starting from 03 November 2011. More on this from The Travel Daily News website.

Sharm el- Sheikh Remains Stop Spot for Divers – 08/07/11
In spite of the country’s problems earlier in the year, Sharm el-Sheikh has increased its strength as a divers’ paradise according to 2011 search figures from Cheapflights.co.uk compared with the same period in 2010. Read the full article on the I Am Egypt website

UN’s Tourism Organization Has Given its Seal of Approval to Egypt’s Tourist Industry – 23/06/11
Taleb Rifai, secretary-general of the United Nations World Tourism Organization, gave this positive quote after his recent visit to Egypt: “Throughout my visit it has been very clear that the Egyptian tourism sector is fully operational and ready to receive visitors. Minister States that Egypt Tourism to Rebound to Pre-revolution Levels in September – 20/06/11
In an interview with a Kuwaiti newspaper, Tourism Minister Mounir Fakhri Abdel Nour predicted that the number of tourists visiting Egypt will return to pre-revolution levels in September. He said several countries’ decisions to lift travel bans on Egypt-bound travelers confirm that the security situation has stabilized. Let’s know that his prediction comes true and travelers begin their return.
